Apology Letter Bank

What is an Apology Letter Bank?

An Apology Letter Bank promotes meaningful healing by allowing an incarcerated person, or a person responsible for harm, to write a letter of apology to the crime survivor(s).

Survivors may contact the Illinois Department of Corrections Victim Services Department to find out if an apology letter exists for them. Support is provided for both the survivors and letter writers.

An Apology Letter is designed to do the following:

  • Allows the responsible party to voice their remorse to the people who have been directly affected by their actions
  • May lead to a Restorative Dialogue
  • Promotes meaningful healing for all participants
